George Bernard Shaw was an Irish playwright, critic, and polemicist widely regarded as one of the most important dramatists in the English language. Born in Dublin, he moved to London as a young man where he became a leading music and theatre critic before turning to drama. Shaw wrote more than sixty plays that blended sharp wit, social criticism, and intellectual debate, tackling issues such as class, politics, marriage, and morality. His most famous works include Pygmalion, Man and Superman, and Saint Joan. A committed social thinker and advocate of change, Shaw was also a prominent member of the Fabian Society, promoting socialism through persuasive writing and public lectures. In 1925 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for work marked by idealism, humanity, and stimulating satire.
